Airlift funds a total of 11 carefully vetted grassroots groups working neighbor-to-neighbor in three important parts of the country. Each area fund has a geographic and strategic focus. On this page you can learn about the groups we support.

Lift the Midwest

Airlift began funding grassroots work in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania early in 2018. These partners turned a red tide blue in 2018, changed the path to the White House in 2020, and won big gains in 2022. The work, however, is just beginning, and the road is steep.

We the People Action Fund

Art Reyes III, Executive Director

Born out of the Flint Water Crisis, We the People Action Fund organizes multi-racial, working class people throughout Michigan, from Detroit to rural areas of the Upper Peninsula, They were instrumental in securing Michigan’s blue trifecta in 2022 by flipping a rural district.

We the People Action Fund has had astonishing success in engaging communities left-behind as the state kept pace with rapid developments of the 21st century by finding ways to bring material improvements to the lives of people in their communities.

Leaders Igniting Transformation (LIT)

Cendi Trujillo Tena and Amanda Avalos, Co-Executive Directors

In 2023 LIT was successful in helping to elect a State Supreme Court justice whose platform will shift the court balance from conservative to a progressive majority. This crucial win will help to determine such issues as voting and abortion rights, gerrymandering, school board races, and in the event of a tight margin in the 2024 presidential election, could determine the final outcome in that state.

In 2022 alone, LIT made 281,474 phone calls, knocked on 50,000 doors and sent 75,898 mailers to young voters statewide encouraging them to vote early and providing voter information. LIT helped re-elect Governor Evers, Attorney General Kaul, and Secretary of State LaFollette. They operated the 7th largest snapshot political advertising campaign in the country and the only one targeted to youth voters. LIT is also involved in police funding policy issues, school board elections, fighting voter suppression attempts, and, of course, critical statewide elections. They create leadership development programs through their large membership base, staff interns, and many other programs. LIT has most recently been involved in a number of important elections, particularly the chance to flip the state Supreme Court in early 2023 from a conservative to more progressive majority. This crucial race could determine a whole host of issues such as voting and abortion rights, gerrymandering, school boards, and even the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. Wisconsin’s future truly is LIT!

Pennsylvania Stands Up

Carrie Santoro, Executive Director

In 2016, Donald Trump won Pennsylvania by 30,000 votes. Over the course of half a century, progressive forces had functionally divested from the huge middle of the state between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Pennsylvania Stands Up stepped into the breach, organizing rural areas and small cities to build back progressive power and win elections, including the presidential race in 2020.

In 2022, PASU played a key role in getting $120 million into the state budget for "Whole Home Repair," enabling substandard housing to be upgraded, utility bills to be lowered, and working people to keep their homes, all the while protecting the environment. Knocking on more than a million doors resulted in more than 40,000 deep canvass conversations, which in turn led to keeping the governor’s seat blue and flipping a U.S. Senate seat as well as 14 seats in the state House to gain Democratic control. All with a core group of organizers under age 35! Their goals: win elections, win progressive issue campaigns, and galvanize a new generation of grassroots leaders across non-metro Pennsylvania.

Transform the South

The South is changing, demographically and politically. Our investments will continue to change its hue from red to purple to ever-deepening shades of progressive blue.

Carolina Federation

Sendolo Diaminah and Jenn Frye, Co-Directors

Carolina Federation works in North Carolina to build permanent, progressive majorities at the local and state level. Their People’s Platform says it all: Democracy, an Economy, Safety and Justice, Homes, Healthcare, Education, and an Environment for all.

Carolina Federation provides support to existing grassroots groups and builds new chapters in key urban and rural counties. One chapter recently flipped the Guilford County Commission from 5-4 conservative to 7-2 progressive. In 2023, the Durham for All affiliate elected three out of four “Forward Together” candidates they endorsed for City Council and Mayor. In just the last two years, Carolina Federation has massively expanded its membership and leadership training, launched their biggest organizing effort yet, and was instrumental in stopping the return of the GOP supermajority in the state legislature. They recruited, endorsed, and supported progressive candidates for local office, and celebrated many local victories. Up next for 2024? Winning the governorship, once again ending the GOP legislative supermajority that was regained when a Democrat switched parties, expanding training capacity, growing the organization’s reach, and continuing to invest in the new movement leaders and candidates we all deserve.

Down Home North Carolina

Dreama Caldwell and Todd Zimmer, Co-Directors

Founded in 2017, Down Home North Carolina is a member-led, multi-racial community organization that raises the voices of working people in small-town and rural North Carolina.

Last year, Down Home celebrated a big win--Medicaid Expansion--after more than a decade of tireless organizing. Now more than 600,000 residents previously deprived of health care are eligible for coverage. Down Home has also greatly expanded its chapters and regional reach. They launched a paid internship program to train people usually left out of the political process to become organizers and future leaders. To combat the right-wing mayhem disrupting school districts, Down Home helped create H.E.A.L. (Honest Education Action & Leadership). Together NC, which focuses on solving the actual problems public schools face. Public School Strong groups are now active in more than 60 counties, resulting in many progressive candidates’ victories in school board races. Down Home launched its biggest Deep Canvass and GOTV efforts ever in 2022; they helped score an upset victory for a US House seat and elect the first Black sheriff ever in Granville County. Down Home member Diamond Staton Williams flipped the crucial seat ending (temporarily) the GOP state legislative supermajority. 2023 saw progressive local victories all over Down Home territories. Now Down Home’s preparing to do it again, bigger and better, for the crucial 2024 elections to keep the governorship blue, end the legislative supermajority, and help put North Carolina’s Electoral College votes in the blue column.

Black Male Initiative Fund

John R. Taylor III and Lyndon Waller, Co-Chairs

Black men make up the second most significant Democratic and progressive voter bloc (after Black women). Still, they’re often depicted as disengaged and blamed for electoral losses. Georgia’s Black Male Initiative Fund (BMIF) combats this false narrative.

Based on five pillars of Civic Engagement, Mental Health and Wellness, Economic Empowerment, Criminal Justice, and Education, BMIF builds community and political power among Black men in the metro-Atlanta area as well as other hubs throughout Georgia. Black Male Initiative began in 2018 with a flyer inviting Black men to meet and discuss the issues that mattered most to them and their families. Ninety people showed up, 300 the next time–with an especially strong showing among young Black men. The Fund was added in 2021 to have a more direct impact on the political and electoral process. This emerging group has shown amazing reach and growth, meeting people where they are and building community as well as political power. BMIF hit the ground running for the Senate campaigns and run-offs in the last two election cycles, and are currently focused on 2023’s municipal elections. Then it’s on to 2024. BMIF is poised to make a huge difference in Georgia’s future.

West by Southwest

West by Southwest comprises fiercely independent grassroots groups in Arizona, California, and Nevada, states with enormous youth and Latino populations that have  played a crucial role in the last several elections.

LUCHA - Living United for Change in Arizona

Alexandra Gomez - Executive Director

LUCHA is a crucial statewide voice in Arizona’s fight for economic justice. Since 2016, LUCHA has been building one of the strongest electoral grassroots programs in Arizona. In the last six years, it has grown as a statewide organization with operations in all Arizona counties and offices in Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma, and Douglas.

In 2022 LUCHA helped elect a Democratic Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State and US Senator by knocking on more than 444,000 doors and making over 126,000 calls to Arizona voters with over 150 volunteers across the state. LUCHA’s work was crucial in turning out infrequent Latinx voters for key statewide victories: Katie Hobbs flipped the governorship, winning by fewer than 20,000 votes, the Secretary of State seat remained blue by a similar margin, and a Democrat flipped the Attorney General race with a win of just 320 votes. LUCHA partners with community groups across the state to elect progressive candidates for boards of supervisors and mayors. Over the course of the past several years, Latinx voter turnout in Arizona has nearly doubled, representing the highest number of Latinx voters in the history of the Grand Canyon State. LUCHA’s work will be critical to electing a Democratic Senator and helping the Democratic presidential candidate win Arizona in 2024.

Worker Power (formerly CASE)

Brendan Walsh, Executive Director

Worker Power fights for better wages, healthcare, housing, and education for working families in Arizona. Since 2008, they’ve helped organize and win better working conditions for Latinx workers in hotels, airports, and supermarkets.

They played a key role in raising the percentage of Latinx mail-in voters from 20% to 80% and defeating Arizona’s infamous anti-immigrant Sheriff Joe Arpaio. In 2020, organizers knocked on 800,000+ doors in full Covid gear and had 260,000 phone conversations with voters, helping to flip a US Senate seat and the White House blue. Worker Power was also essential in 2022's midterm victories up and down the ballot. Not content to leave it all on the field for just Arizona, they immediately moved onto Georgia for the U.S. Senate run-offs in 2020 and 2022. They sent hundreds of Spanish-speaking canvassers to make sure every Latinx household in Georgia got a visit, helping to secure three thrilling victories in a row.

One APIA Nevada

Eric Jeng, Acting Executive Director

Nevada’s Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander community has grown more than 225% since 2000. This diverse group is a new political powerhouse. One APIA Nevada was founded in 2018 with a mission to advance the interests of these often-overlooked communities through issue advocacy and electoral work.

This vibrant grassroots organization already has an impressive track record. They’re especially skilled at increasing engagement and turnout of younger voters while also connecting with the older immigrant population. With outreach in 14 languages (complete with K-Pop concerts and petting zoos at community events!), they were instrumental in turning out the vote to re-elect Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, flip the Secretary of State office blue, and secure other victories at the national, state, and local levels in 2022. In 2023, One APIA Nevada’s focus will be on the state legislative session and preparing for 2024, when the presidency and Nevada’s Senate race will headline this all-important swing state.

OC Action

Jonathan Paik, Executive Director

OC Action is an alliance of the Asian American Pacific Islander, Latino, and labor communities in Orange County, California. It is organized to promote economic and environmental justice. Communities of color represent over 60 percent of the population of formerly majority-white and conservative Orange County. These communities now play an influential role in local elections and on progressive issues.

The demographic changes of the last two decades have shifted Orange County politics from red to purple, resulting in important wins in local, state, and congressional elections in Orange County in 2018, 2020, and 2022. OC Action is a prominent voice for progressive policies and candidates in Orange County. Its staff and volunteers engage in community education, local activism, political research, and multi-lingual door-to-door engagement throughout the year. In the 2022 election, OC Action deployed 60 full-time canvassers to engage in extended conversations with tens of thousands of infrequent voters. OC Action’s grassroots program played an important role in the Democratic sweep of Orange County congressional races in 2018, and in 2022 the election of the first Democratic-majority county board of supervisors in decades. The continuation and expansion of these victories depends on the year-round, grass-roots campaigns of OC Action.

Communities for a New California

Pablo Rodriguez, Executive Director

Communities for a New California (CNC) is a civil and human rights organization fighting to achieve environmental and economic justice for the poor and under-represented communities of California’s agricultural regions, including the San Joaquin Valley and Coachella Valley.

The San Joaquin Valley is the bread basket for the nation and the world, but suffers from poor air and water quality and supply, low wages, and housing inequality. Communities of color represent a majority of the San Joaquin population. The 2020 congressional redistricting created three majority-Latino districts in the Central Valley, and three other congressional districts that will be competitive in 2024. Turnout of these communities is key to the ability of Democrats to regain a majority in Congress in 2024. CNC works to educate and motivate people who have historically been left out of policy decisions with effects on their neighborhoods and families. In 2022 CNC engaged with over 250,000 low- and moderate-propensity voters contributing to important Democratic wins in the region. The CNC programs are key to the Democrats’ ability to regain a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
